Composite decking

Composite decking is made of a combination of wood fibers and plastic, with the completed product being a very realistic fake wood. Composite decking can be capped wood or uncapped wood. Capped wood composite decking gives you better protection because the boards are sealed with plastic, while uncapped wood composite decking is more vulnerable to the elements and likely to develop mildew and mold when the boards are exposed.

The main advantage with composite is that it doesn’t require a lot of maintenance. Seeing as it’s not wood, but a composite material that typically also has a plastic coating, cleaning it and keeping it looking nice doesn’t take you long and doesn’t take a lot of effort.

In addition, despite not being real wood, the effect is very much natural, with composite often having all the markings of genuine lumber. It’ll look good for years and years, and no one will be the wiser. Especially if you want a certain look or color for your porch, this is a great way to achieve your vision with minimal effort.

Composite is one of the most expensive types of decking material, and in addition to that, you have to consider the lifetime cost, which includes any necessary maintenance you may be doing on your deck over the years. Even with maintenance and eventual repairs, a natural wooden deck is oftentimes more affordable than composite decking, in the long run.

Wood decking

You can choose to install wood decking made of different types of wood. Minnesota decks are usually constructed with cedar and southern treated pine.

One of the big advantages of a genuine wood deck is the durability. You can expect 20, or even 30 years out of your wooden deck, as long as you maintain it properly, clean it, stain it, etc. Natural wood lasts long with the proper maintenance, so as long as you treat it well, it will treat you well in return.

Even with all the lifetime maintenance costs, a wooden deck usually still comes out cheaper in the end, this might be another thing to keep in mind when deciding on materials. \

Compared to composite, wood can seem like a lot of maintenance. It’s true that you need to form a deck maintenance routine if you want to keep it looking fresh and last for a long time. Nowadays, a lot of homeowners don’t have the time or simply aren’t willing to put in the time and effort, so they prefer to opt for composite, which is lower maintenance.

Deck contractors are very important here, and if you pick the wrong one, you may find that your wooden deck is not nearly as durable as you want it to be. That’s why Compass Exteriors makes an ideal choice for your custom decking.

Railing types

Of course, with brand new custom and unique decks, people often opt for metal railings to complement the beautiful decking. There are a few different choices you can make here which can impact the way your deck looks. Most people opt for powder-coated aluminum for decks, because it features low maintenance, low cost, and is resistance to different types of weather.
