Gutter Repair & Replacement

Services Gutters

Gutters are your home's first line of defense against water damage. Compass Exteriors has 20+ years installing and repairing gutters on Minneapolis-area homes — on time, within budget, and built to handle Minnesota's harsh winters.

When Do You Need Gutter Work?

  • Clogged gutters — leaves and debris block drainage and lead to overflow and foundation damage
  • Ice dam damage — Minnesota's freeze-thaw cycles can tear gutters away from the fascia
  • Leaking gutters — cracks, separated joints, or improper slope allowing water to escape
  • Storm damage — flying debris, fallen branches, or wind can bend, detach, or crush gutters
  • Sagging gutters — failed hangers and brackets, often from ice or debris weight

Gutter Materials

Aluminum (Most Popular)

Lightweight, rust-free, and available in seamless runs up to 100+ feet. Highly customizable in color. Seamless aluminum gutters eliminate most leak points and are the right choice for the vast majority of Twin Cities homes.

Copper

Premium material that develops a beautiful patina over time. Extremely durable and rust-free. Higher cost, but copper gutters often last 50+ years and significantly enhance curb appeal on traditional and craftsman homes.

Steel

Strong and durable, handles heavy snow and ice loads well. Requires periodic painting to prevent rust. A good choice for homes in heavily wooded areas where debris impact is a concern.

Vinyl (Not Recommended for MN)

While cheap, vinyl becomes brittle in cold temperatures and cracks under ice weight. We don't recommend vinyl gutters for Minnesota homes.

Gutter Styles

K-Style

The most common style, named for their shape — molded to look like crown molding. The rigid structure makes them sturdier than half-round gutters, and they have high capacity for water flow.

Half-Round and Quarter-Round

Common on older and historic homes. Water flow is very effective, but they run slightly larger than K-style — a 6" half-round is equivalent to a 5" K-style in capacity.

Integral Gutters

Found on some 1960s homes, integral gutters are built into the roofline and lined with roofing material. They have great capacity but a higher potential for leaking, requiring maintenance every few years.

Box Gutters

Box-shaped gutters designed to collect water draining from two roofs. Less common on residential homes — repair and replacement is significantly more complex and expensive than standard gutter styles.

Extending the Life of Your Gutters

Regular cleaning, repainting, and prompt minor repairs go a long way toward preventing rust, cracks, and structural failure. Gutter guard installation significantly reduces how often cleaning is needed — micro-mesh guards are the most effective option, keeping debris out while allowing full water flow.
